"When a story won't let you go, it's a very good signal that you should find a way to make it."A British officer in WWII, Lomax was captured by the Japanese and sent to work on the notorious "death railway" in Burma. He was tortured as a spy for making a radio to bring his fellow prisoners news of the outside world.That trauma cast a long shadow over his life. Decades later, when a woman forced him to confront his deep psychological wounds, he resolved to track down one of his torturers, with extraordinary results.Firth will play the older Lomax, with the rest of the cast yet to be announced. The pic is a U.K./Australian co-production. Lionsgate is taking U.K. rights and handling international sales, with Transmission pre-buying Australasia. Budget is approximately $20 million."It will look like a $50 million film, but will cost less than half that," Paterson says. "What we do as independent producers is take hugely ambitious projects and find clever ways of making them for much less than it looks like."The Archer Street trio started developing "The Railway Man" in 1998, under their first-look deal with Intermedia and Film4. Intermedia topper Nigel Sinclair introduced Paterson to Bill Curbishley, manager of the Who, who owned the rights to Lomax's book and remains a producer on the film.But when Archer Street's overall deal ran out, the script went into turnaround. Paterson, Tucker and Cottrell Boyce worked on other projects, both separately and together. When Paterson emerged from making "Girl With a Pearl Earring" and "Beyond the Sea" back to back, he turned again to "The Railway Man," looking for ways to crack the structure of the script and raise the financing in a market where sales estimates, especially for period drama, were collapsing."For a long time, it was impossible to get sales estimates for a drama of this scale, when drama was a dirty word among distributors," Paterson says. "We were going insane trying to find ways of telling the story properly, and ways of financing that."He says the pic could have been made more cheaply, but would have sacrificed its epic feel. "The film has to convey the scale of that railway, and what people went through to build it, because that's what motivated our character to do what he did."Eventually Paterson and Cottrell Boyce, who ended up sharing the writing credit, found a new angle on the script, foregrounding the woman who changed Lomax's life and building up the thriller elements. That sparked fresh interest from financiers, but Tucker was now unavailable because he was immersed in the DreamWorks animation project "Truckers" (scripted by Cottrell Boyce).Paterson attached Teplitzky, whose "Burning Man" he produced in Australia last year, to direct. Firth read the script in the midst of his Oscar campaign for "The King's Speech.""When he called back and said he loved it, that was the most extraordinary moment in the project's history," Paterson recalls. "Suddenly we had a script that everybody loves, and this year's Oscar winner who everybody loves."With "The King's Speech" making distribs take another look at period drama, the financing puzzle fell into place. Approximately 30% of the budget was raised through Australia's producer offset (with Chris Brown as the Australian co-producer) and the U.K. tax credit, and another 15%-20% in equity from Screen Australia and Screen Queensland, where the Burmese railroad scenes will be shot."When you are trying to do something which, on the face of it, is more expensive than the market can stand, you need that soft money to reduce the straight risk element of the budget," Paterson says.Daria Jovovic, a NY-based producer-financier who provided seed finance or bridge loans for several of Archer Street's previous pics, is stepping up to make her first major investment, with a mixture of equity and gap finance. 'Star Wars' Creator George Lucas Self-Finances Movie About First African-American Fighter Pilots

NY - George Lucas is self-financing a film inspired by the first organized group of African-American fighter pilots in the U.S. armed forces, known as the Tuskegee Airmen, the Wall Street Journal reported. lThe airmen, whose story will be featured in Red Tails, fought in World War II. The film stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Ne-Yo, David Oyelowo and Nate Parker, according to the Journal. The Star Wars creator put $58 million of his own money into the movie and is spending $35 million more for its distribution, the Journal said. It will be released by Lucas' production firm Lucasfilm Ltd. on Jan. 20, with News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox distributing it. Lucas told the newspaper through a representative that he has worked on the project for 23 years. He wanted to make an inspirational film for young people featuring role models, the paper added. Lindsay Duncan will headline a new West End revival of Noel Coward's comedy "Hay Fever" from Feb. 10 next year. NBC's Up All Night even recorded a 46 percent boost during premiere week from a 2.4 to a 3.5 rating, according to the Times. And the network's Whitney went from a 3.3 rating to a 4.2 rating when including DVR viewing. The Two and Half Men season premiere on CBS, featuring the first appearance by Ashton Kutcher, jumped from a 10.7 rating to a 12.5 rating, the Times said. The declining Dancing With the Stars on ABC, however, gained only 12 percent from a 4 to a 4.5 rating, the paper highlighted. For Fox's Fringe, which has struggled on Friday nights, the DVR viewing data could prove critical though as its viewership rose from a 1.5 rating for its season premiere to a 2.3. 'Breathing,' 'Michael' among EFA Discovery noms

BERLIN -- Two Austrian pics are among the noms for the European Film Academy's Discovery Award, which recognizes the work of up-and-coming directors. Karl Markovics' feature film debut "Breathing," about a young ex-con who sets out to find the mother he never knew while working at the Vienna municipal morgue, is also Austria's candidate for the foreign-language Oscar, and has already picked up a number of awards, including the Europa Cinemas Label in Directors' Fortnight at Cannes and the Sarajevo Film Festival's top prize. Markus Schleinzer's "Michael," which premiered in the main competition in Cannes, centers on a pedophile who keeps a 10-year-old boy locked in his basement. Also vying for the award are Hans Van Nuffel's Belgian-Dutch co-production "Oxygen," about a teen with cystic fibrosis who rebels against his condition; Mikkel Munch-Fals' Danish drama "Nothing's All Bad," which explores the loneliness and sexuality of four people whose stories intersect; and Nikola Lezaic's Serbian slacker pic "Tilva Ros," about a group of skateboarding teens in a town suffering from economic hardship. 'Superstar' books Broadway

Broadway will resurrect Jesus Christ one more time, with the well-received Stratford Shakespeare Company revival of "Jesus Christ Superstar" transferring to the Neil Simon Theater in March.Move makes "Superstar" the second Biblical tuner to open in Gotham this season, following the November opening of "Godspell."Show had seemed a likely bet for the Main Stem since it bowed, given the critical praise heaped on the show by Canuck press and the pedigree of helmer Des McAnuff ("Jersey Boys"). Soon after the production opened at Stratford, "Superstar" landed a fall slot at the La Jolla Playhouse, the regional house where a slew of McAnuff shows -- including "Jersey Boys," "700 Sundays" and "The Who's Tommy" -- played prior to hitting the Main Stem.Among the notable dissenters in the critical corps was a tepid review in the NY Times, a potential hurdle to a Gotham transfer that could potentially be mitigated by a title strong enough to attract auds even without the paper's thumbs-up.No casting has yet been announced for the Broadway incarnation.
